“Eat right when money’s tight”

Many Texans have trouble making ends meet each month. After paying for rent, utilities, transportation and childcare, there’s often little left over to buy nutritious food.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

In Bexar County alone, more than 370,000 people are eligible for food stamp assistance, but only just over 164,000 actually get them. It doesn't have to be that way. In Bexar County, more than $18,000,000 in potential food stamp benefits is going unused each month.

What is the Food Stamp/SNAP Program?

The Food Stamp Program is a federally funded program that helps low-income families buy the nutritious food from retailers. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) pays for food stamp benefits throughout the country, and the Department of Health and Human Services manages and directs the program in Texas.

Low-income people with dependent children and some people who are elderly or have disabilities are eligible for food stamp benefits. There is no time limit for food stamp benefits for people with children and people who are elderly or have disabilities.

Benefits are also available to able-bodied adults (ages 18-50) who have no children. However, these individuals must work at least 20 hours a week or meet other work requirements in order to receive food stamp benefits. If adults without dependent children do not meet work requirements, they are limited to three months of benefits in any 36-month period.
