*NEW* SOCIAL SERVICE/OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

 
 
MOBILE FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEERS
Hours – Varies and will depend on location. Pantry events in Bexar County are normally 4 hours in length, but may be less based on the needs of the SA Food Bank. In the rural areas travel time will be added.
Individuals/Groups - Requires appointment and pre-screening via phone or e-mail from the Volunteer Coordinator before placement takes place.
Dress Code - For safety, absolutely no sandals or flip-flops. Please wear closed-toed shoes and appropriate attire for weather due to event being outside. Volunteers may want to bring gloves. Dress for the weather.
Food & beverages – Water will be provided, but volunteers may bring their own items. Lunch is volunteer’s responsibility.
Age limits – Due to safety concerns and the high volume of traffic, the minimum age limit for any volunteer at the Mobile Pantry Event is 18 years of age. 
Job Descriptions: Based on the number attending volunteer could be asked to due a variety of these jobs
Assist Mobile Pantry (8-10 volunteers)
Assist the Mobile Pantry Coordinator (MPC) by breaking down pallets of product, bagging if necessary and handing out product to clients. This includes cleaning up the area and stacking pallets and trash into truck. Volunteers will also collect vouchers from clients.
Filling out Vouchers with Clients (2)
Verifying clients have vouchers before receiving product, if a client does not have a voucher then qualifying client and assisting them with voucher. Once all clients receive voucher verification volunteers will assist in collecting vouchers and distributing food.
Traffic Control – (2)
Volunteers will direct and control the flow of traffic. Being safe is the main priority at an event, volunteers will be provided a bright colored vest to remain visible to others.
Nutrition Education Volunteer (2)
Assist Nutrition Education staff with demonstration and handing out flyers.
Social Services Volunteer (2)
Assist the Social Services staff with handing out flyers to clients.
Project H.O.P.E. Volunteer (2)
Assist the Project H.O.P.E. staff with signing up clients and handing out flyers.
Children’s Program Volunteer (2)
Assist the Children’s Program staff with handing out flyers to clients.

WAREHOUSE OPPORTUNITIES

 

SALVAGE SORTING AND FOOD BOX PREPARATION-WAREHOUSE 
Job Description: Sorting salvaged edible and non-edible food products and placing them in appropriate bins or boxes. Checking for signs of contamination, rodent or insect infestation, unknown spills on the product and/or rotten smells. Checking dates as instructed. Other warehouse duties include, but not limited to: sweeping, trash pick up, mopping and general clean-up of work areas.
Volunteer times:
Tuesday - Friday – Two separate (3) hour sessions from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, EXCEPT on SAFB holidays or as otherwise indicated.
Saturday - Schedule varies
Sunday and Monday - No volunteers on these days.                                                                                                                       

 

NUTRITION EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES
 

 COMMUNITY GARDENER

Where:  5200 Old Hwy 90 W. San Antonio TX, 78227
When:  Monday –Saturday unless otherwise determined by the SAFB. One session each day from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. 
Who: Individuals and Groups of up to 50 people, larger groups will be accepted on a case by case basis. All volunteers require prescreening by the Volunteer Coordinator (VC) prior to volunteering.
Job Description: Assist with the planting, caring for and gleaning of fruits, vegetables and other edible plants. Help with the construction of square foot gardening boxes, raised beds, trellis’s, walking paths and assist with general maintenance of existing structures. Duties may include composting, weeding, digging, planting, watering and/or hoeing.
Please Note: Dress for the weather, wear close-toed shoes and clothes that are appropriate for a large garden. Gloves are helpful. Some water is provided. Volunteer sessions could be cancelled due to inclement weather.  Should a cancellation occur we will attempt to provide another volunteer opportunity.
Cautionary Note: Individual’s sensitive to bee stings should not volunteer in the garden

 NUTRITION TEAM LEADER
Job Description:
Assist the SAFB Nutrition Education staff with a variety of tasks to include class preparation, class assistance and clerical work.
Volunteer times: Monday-Friday. Flexible. Preferably 2 to 4 hours per week. Saturday opportunities are available to assist at community health fairs.
 

COMMUNITY KITCHEN OPPORTUNITIES

 
  
KIDS CAFE AND COMMUNITY KITCHEN
Where:  5200 Old Highway 90 W.
When:  Monday to Friday 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM – EXCEPT on SAFB Holidays or as needed
Who: Individuals and groups of up to 20 volunteers
Job Description: Receive briefing on the day’s meal(s) to be distributed to Kid’s Café sites; issue and document Kid’s Café meals, load meals into hot/cold holding containers; accurately document times that meals were picked-up, equipment was returned and issued; wash, clean, sanitize & store kitchen tools, containers & equipment. Pre-prep as needed for next day’s meal; sweep, mop and store supplies as needed. Assist with general pick-up/clean-up as needed & requested by Executive Chef.
 
DWYER AVENUE HOUSE
Where: 307 Dwyer. - 210-225-2234
When:  Monday to Sunday 365 days a year. Volunteer times are Monday thru Friday – (3) shifts from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 3:00PM to 6:00 PM. Saturday & Sunday (3) shifts 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM and 3:00PM to 6:00PM
Who:  Individuals and smalls groups of up to 6 volunteers
Job Description:  Assist with the preparation of breakfast, lunch and dinner meals.  All aspects of kitchen clean up e.g. dishwashing, sweeping, mopping. Assist with serving of the meal – there are two areas – one for the Battered Women and/or homeless families in residence.
Notes: There is no parking at this location; you will have to pay for your parking. You will get ticketed and towed otherwise! *Report to the shelter guard & tell them that you are there for the Kitchen during the posted hours previously provided.  The guard will acknowledge you and allow the volunteers to proceed to the kitchen to work with the assigned chef on duty.
 


OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
Job Description: Assist with a variety of administrative tasks to include Internet research, letter folding, stapling packets, data entry and/or answering phones.
Volunteer times: Monday-Friday. Sessions are generally from 9:00am to 4:00 pm but can be flexible.

APPLE CORPS-VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES


VOLUNTEER TEAM LEAD - WAREHOUSE ONLY
Job Description: In conjunction with a SAFB staff lead, Warehouse Team Leads will teach, lead and mentor volunteers on a daily basis to groups of up to 50. Provide general and accurate information about the SAFB. Promote programs and policies. This position requires an outgoing personality and experience working with diverse populations including persons with special needs. Excellent verbal and motivational communication skills are needed. A willingness to speak in public and must be professional at all times. A basic understanding of the principles of volunteer management is helpful. This is a perfect opportunity for retirees.
Volunteer times: Schedule will be similar to other volunteer times, but will be dependant on current needs and number of team leads.

HUNGER FIGHTER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Do you have a passion for the issue of Hunger and want to help?  Become an advocate and help the San Antonio Food Bank spread the message by helping with Food & Fund Drives, Special Events and Food Fairs.

When: Monday through Sunday

Where: Location varies

Who: Individuals and small groups

Job Description:  Represent the San Antonio Food Bank through events that promote our programs.  Help collect food and money at Food Drive and distribute food and Food Fairs.  Volunteer during special events such as Harvest of Hope, CANstruction, and the Turkey Challenge.  Have Fun!

SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS
Job Description: In conjunction with a SAFB staff lead, will work with other committee members to develop a marketing plan for meeting and/or exceeding budgetary goals. Attends all committee meetings, attends the event and ensures that the event progresses according to the event timeline. This is a wonderful opportunity for community leaders to engage the public in getting involved with the SAFB. Individuals with marketing, communications and sales backgrounds are encouraged to get involved!
